A programme to upgrade milk collection centers (MCCs) has been launched in Nyagatare District, aiming to improve milk quality and strengthen handling infrastructure as many facilities have deteriorated and no longer meet required standards.

The initiative is being implemented under the second phase of the Rwanda Dairy Development Project (RDDP II), which focuses on improving dairy production systems and increasing the supply of quality-assured milk.

Initial works have begun at the Muvumba Zirakamwa Cooperative milk collection center, which receives milk from farmers in Tabagwe Sector.

The ongoing renovation works include construction of a perimeter fence, paving of the compound, installation of tiled flooring, and refurbishment of the building to enhance hygiene and milk storage conditions.

Members of the cooperative said the facility had significantly deteriorated over time, creating challenges related to safety, hygiene, and proper milk handling.

Farmers supplying the center welcomed the upgrades, saying the improved infrastructure will help reduce contamination risks and improve the quality of milk delivered to the market.

They also expressed optimism that the renovations will address long-standing operational challenges linked to aging facilities and contribute to increased productivity.

Project officials said all 16 milk collection centers in Nyagatare District will be upgraded as part of efforts to strengthen milk value chains and improve dairy farmers’ capacity in the region.
