Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) karate teams, including APR Karate Club and the RDF Special Forces Karate Team, joined clubs from across the country in a karate tournament held to commemorate the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
The 32nd edition of the memorial tournament took place in Karongi District on June 21, bringing together male and female athletes from various regions of Rwanda.
Organized by the Rwanda Karate Federation (FERWAKA), the event aimed to honor the victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi while promoting peace, unity and reconciliation through sport.
Ahead of the competition, participants took part in remembrance activities, including a walk to the Rubengera Genocide Memorial, where 3,439 victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi are buried.
APR Karate Club emerged as the men’s champions, while Club Rafiki claimed the women’s title.
Speaking at the event, Karongi District Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs Pascasie Umuhoza commended the youth and FERWAKA for using sport as a platform to preserve the memory of the Genocide against the Tutsi and support survivors.
She urged athletes to continue upholding the discipline, respect and integrity that define the sport of karate.
The tournament was also organized in memory of karate practitioners who were killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and attracted teams from different parts of the country.
