Construction of a major waste treatment and disposal facility in Musanze District has reached 80 percent completion, the Ministry of Infrastructure (MININFRA) has announced.
The 6.8-hectare facility, located in Gacaca Sector, began construction in 2024 as part of Rwanda’s efforts to develop modern and sustainable waste management systems. It was initially scheduled for completion in June 2026.
The project is designed to improve sanitation services and support the country’s goal of promoting clean and environmentally friendly communities.
According to MININFRA, the facility will have the capacity to process 33 tonnes of non-biodegradable waste, 62 cubic metres of light waste, and 7,000 cubic metres of faecal sludge.
Once operational, the plant will serve four Northern Province districts — Musanze, Nyabihu, Burera, and Gakenke — by providing a centralized system for managing both biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.
Waste collected from toilets will be treated and converted into fertilizer, while biodegradable waste will be processed into compost. Non-biodegradable materials will be managed through disposal at a designated landfill.
MININFRA said the facility will contribute to environmental protection, improve public health, and strengthen sustainable sanitation services in the region.
