Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, arrived in Rwanda on Saturday for a two-day official visit focused on strengthening military cooperation and bilateral relations between Kigali and Kampala.
General Muhoozi landed at Kigali International Airport, where he was received by Rwanda’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Mubarakh Muganga, alongside Major General Willy Rwagasana, Commander of the Republican Guard.
According to the Rwanda Defence Force, the visit will include meetings with senior military officials to discuss ways of deepening defence cooperation between the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) and the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF). General Muhoozi is also expected to hold talks with President Paul Kagame.
The visit comes as Rwanda and Uganda continue to expand security and defence cooperation following the normalisation of relations between the two neighbouring countries.
General Muhoozi last visited Rwanda in March 2025, when he held discussions with senior RDF commanders on bilateral military cooperation and toured the Rwanda Military Academy in Nyakinama, Musanze District. During the visit, he delivered a lecture on the role of African countries in promoting regional peace and security.
Ahead of the trip, General Muhoozi had publicly indicated that he would return to Rwanda. On July 4, during Rwanda’s Liberation Day celebrations, he congratulated Rwandans on the occasion and commended President Paul Kagame’s leadership.
General Muhoozi has frequently expressed admiration for President Kagame and has publicly described him as one of Africa’s most influential leaders, reflecting the close personal ties that have accompanied the renewed relationship between Rwanda and Uganda.
