Gasabo District says alcohol-related crimes have declined by nearly 65 per cent after authorities closed 3,400 bars operating illegally, including those involved in the sale of substandard alcohol.
The district administration said the measures, implemented over the past year, have contributed to reducing excessive alcohol consumption and crimes linked to alcohol abuse.
Gasabo Deputy Executive Administrator Regis Mudaheranwa said the closure of the illegal drinking establishments has played a significant role in improving public safety and addressing social challenges associated with alcohol misuse.
“In Gasabo, within one year, we closed 3,400 bars. We have fewer than 320 health facilities, both public and private. This means nearly one in every 10 services residents need were bars, but we closed them, and crimes have reduced by nearly 65 per cent since we began tackling excessive alcohol consumption,” Mudaheranwa said.
The crackdown comes amid nationwide efforts to fight illicit and substandard alcohol products, which health authorities say continue to cause serious health consequences among consumers.
The Ministry of Health has reported that in the past six months, unsafe alcohol consumption has resulted in 50 deaths, while more than 100 people lost their eyesight permanently. At least 20 children are currently receiving kidney dialysis due to complications linked to harmful alcohol consumption.
The ministry further reported that around 11,000 people have developed alcohol dependence, while more than 500 people sought medical treatment after consuming unsafe alcohol products.
Authorities have urged residents to avoid unregulated alcoholic beverages and provide information on individuals involved in their production and sale as part of efforts to protect public health and prevent alcohol-related crimes.
The campaign has also led to the closure of illegal alcohol manufacturing facilities and the withdrawal of operating licences from businesses found producing or distributing unsafe alcoholic beverages.
