APR FC has formally notified the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) that it will not participate in the 2026 Super Cup, putting the tournament’s planned four-team format in uncertainty.
FERWAFA Secretary General Bonnie Mugabe confirmed that the federation received a letter from APR FC on Monday, August 10, informing it of the club’s decision.
Mugabe said FERWAFA will examine the reasons given by APR FC before announcing its position on the matter.
The development follows concerns raised by APR FC head coach Taleb Abderrahim over the format of this year’s Super Cup.
APR FC won both the 2025/26 Rwanda Premier League and Peace Cup, meaning it would traditionally face Rayon Sports, who finished second in the league, in a single Super Cup fixture.
However, FERWAFA changed the format this year to include the top four teams from the league in a semi-final stage.
Under the initial draw, APR FC were set to face Kiyovu Sports, while Rayon Sports were drawn against Police FC. The winners would then meet in the final.
Taleb questioned the need for APR FC to play two matches in the competition instead of a single game against Rayon Sports, given the club’s status as both league and Peace Cup champions.
The semi-finals were initially scheduled for August 22 at Amahoro Stadium in Remera before being moved to Stade Umuganda in Rubavu. The semi-finals are now scheduled for August 22 and 23, with the final set for August 28 at Amahoro Stadium.
APR FC’s decision to withdraw leaves FERWAFA with the task of determining how to proceed with the competition and whether the planned format will be maintained.
The federation is expected to announce its position after reviewing the reasons presented by APR FC.
