FPR Inkotanyi members in Rusizi District have been warned against using their party membership to shield themselves from accountability while engaging in drug trafficking, contraband trade and other illegal activities.

The warning was issued on Sunday during the party’s General Assembly in Rusizi, where members discussed security and social challenges affecting residents and called for stronger measures to address them.

Drug use and trafficking, along with contraband trade, were identified as key concerns because of their potential impact on public safety, the economy and residents’ livelihoods.

Dr Papiyasi Niyigena, a commissioner at FPR Inkotanyi, said Rusizi has significant development potential, particularly given the high proportion of residents who are party members.

According to figures presented at the meeting, 98.7% of Rusizi residents are members of FPR Inkotanyi.

Niyigena stressed that party membership should not be used as a shield for illegal conduct, including the sale of illicit substances and tax evasion.

“We will not tolerate people who, simply because they are members, continue selling poison under the guise of alcohol or engage in illegal activities and evade our taxes while we are striving for self-reliance,” he said.

Rusizi District Mayor Sindiheba Phanuel said the meeting had also highlighted concerns about some party members failing to set a good example for the wider community.

He urged members to lead by example and ensure that the principles of FPR Inkotanyi are reflected in their conduct.

“There are about three things we need to uphold. First, we must do the right thing and lead by example. Second, we must understand that these core principles of FPR Inkotanyi are for you and me to put into practice,” he said.

“A member should not act like a mercenary; a member should act like a member of the family,” he added.

The meeting called for stronger cooperation among members and greater community participation in addressing challenges affecting residents.

Members also pledged to support efforts to combat drug-related activities and contraband trade while prioritising public safety, residents’ welfare and the district’s development.

The resolutions come as Rusizi continues to address security and socio-economic challenges linked to illicit activities, with local leaders calling for collective action and greater accountability among community members.
