Rwandan singer Safi Madiba has responded to a recent debate surrounding comments about the intelligence and behaviour of Rayon Sports supporters, arguing that passionate support for a football club should not be mistaken for ignorance or disorder.

Safi, who is based in Canada and is currently in Rwanda, made the remarks after being asked about comments by journalist Kayitesi Yvonne, popularly known as Tessy, which recently circulated widely on social media.

Tessy had described Rayon Sports supporters as not “smart”, prompting reactions from some fans and public figures.

Safi was speaking after attending Rayon Sports’ 2-1 friendly victory over Sudanese side Al Ahly SC Wad Madani at Kigali Pelé Stadium on Wednesday, August 19.

Cameroonian striker Kameni Herman Junior scored both goals as Rayon Sports continued their strong preparations for the 2026/27 season.

Asked about Tessy’s remarks in an interview with IGIHE, Safi disagreed with the characterisation of Rayon Sports supporters and said that, in his view, the person making such a claim was the one lacking “smartness.”

He argued that strong emotions and loyalty towards a football club should not automatically be interpreted as ignorance or disorder.

“Loving something with all your heart is not disorder,” Safi said.

The singer said his connection with Rayon Sports goes beyond football, describing the club as a family rather than simply a sports team.

He added that he considers the club’s supporters part of that family because they share a common passion for Rayon Sports.

Safi also revealed plans to release a new song dedicated to Rayon Sports as his contribution to supporting the club and its supporters.

The singer also used the occasion to remember the late Mugemana Charles, a former Rayon Sports team doctor who died in January 2026.

Safi said Mugemana was among the people he would have wished to see at the match and share in the celebrations.

Mugemana served as Rayon Sports’ doctor for more than 30 years and became closely associated with the club during his long service.

The comments come as Rayon Sports continue their preparations for the new season, having maintained an impressive winning run in pre-season matches.
