Rwanda’s Water and Sanitation Corporation (WASAC) has pledged to increase water supply to Kigali by 10,000 cubic metres per day within two weeks as authorities seek to ease persistent shortages affecting several parts of the city.
WASAC apologised to customers facing inadequate supply, particularly during the ongoing dry season, and said short-term interventions are being implemented at the Kanzenze and Nzove water treatment plants.
The additional production is expected to improve water distribution and reduce the frequency of supply interruptions in areas including Kanombe, Ndera, Nyarugunga, Busanza, Kabeza, Rubirizi, Karama, Runda and Rugalika.
The utility also outlined longer-term measures to address Kigali’s growing water demand. The Nzove plant is expected to increase its daily production capacity by 25,000 cubic metres before the end of 2026, from about 86,000 cubic metres to 111,000 cubic metres.
Meanwhile, the Karenge water treatment plant in Rwamagana District is planned for expansion from 12,000 to 48,000 cubic metres per day by 2027.
The latest intervention comes amid a significant gap between Kigali’s water demand and available production. Recent reports indicate that the city requires about 210,000 cubic metres of water per day, while current production is around 145,000 cubic metres.
WASAC urged residents to remain patient as the projects are implemented and pledged to improve the transparency and fairness of water rationing.
The utility also warned residents against using untreated water from streams, wetlands and other unprotected sources because of potential health risks, while encouraging households receiving water intermittently to use storage tanks or other suitable containers.
The government is implementing additional water infrastructure projects as part of efforts to expand access to clean and reliable water across Rwanda.
