Rwanda’s women’s national volleyball team has been drawn in Group D alongside Algeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi at the 2026 African Women’s Volleyball Championship in Nairobi, Kenya.
The draw was conducted on Monday, August 24, ahead of the continental tournament that brings together 15 participating national teams. The Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) confirmed Rwanda’s placement in Group D.
Hosts and defending champions Kenya will compete in Group A alongside Mali and Zambia. Group B features Egypt, Uganda, Burkina Faso and Senegal, while Group C comprises Cameroon, Nigeria, Tunisia and Ghana.
The tournament is scheduled to take place in Nairobi, with matches being played at Kasarani Indoor Arena and the Ulinzi Sports Complex.
Rwanda arrived in Kenya on Sunday and held its first training session ahead of the competition. The team also played a warm-up match against Algeria as part of its preparations, with both sides using the game to assess their readiness for the tournament.
Rwanda’s group presents a demanding challenge, with Algeria among the established sides in African women’s volleyball, while DR Congo and Burundi add regional rivalry to the pool.
The tournament carries significant stakes beyond the continental title, forming part of the qualification pathway towards the 2027 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
With the groups now confirmed, Rwanda will turn its attention to its opening fixture as it seeks to progress from Group D and compete for a place among Africa’s leading women’s volleyball teams.
