Renovation works at Huye International Stadium are expected to resume after the funding needed to complete the long-delayed project was secured, Huye District Mayor Sebutege Ange has said.
The announcement comes just days after reports that work at the stadium had stalled, with the facility still not ready to host matches ahead of the 2026/27 Rwanda Premier League season.
Sebutege said the delay was partly caused by changes to the scope of the project. What initially started as a plan to replace the stadium’s artificial turf was expanded after assessments showed that replacing the surface alone would not address underlying drainage and pitch-related problems.
He said the additional works required a revision of the project and increased its budget, contributing to the delays.
“We have good news. The funding that was awaited to complete the works has been secured. We therefore expect the contractor to resume the project and speed up the works,” Sebutege said.
The mayor, however, said the stadium is unlikely to be ready for the start of the new league season in September. He expressed hope that the facility could be completed before the end of 2026.
Huye Stadium has been the home venue for Mukura Victory Sports and Amagaju FC, but both clubs are currently using Kamena Stadium for their matches and are expected to continue doing so until the renovation is completed.
The renovation project dates back to the 2022/23 financial year and was initially expected to be completed in 2026. Works began in July 2025, including replacement of the playing surface and improvements to the drainage system.
The project has faced several delays, including financial constraints and additional technical requirements. Earlier reports indicated that the artificial turf remained among the major outstanding works, while the drainage system had also been redesigned to address water accumulation on the pitch.
The stadium was previously expected to be ready by August 15, 2026, but that deadline passed without the facility reopening.
The newly secured funding is now expected to allow the remaining works to resume and bring the project closer to completion.
