Rwanda and Mozambique are strengthening defence cooperation, with a new focus on improving social welfare services for military personnel and their families.
Rwanda Defence Minister Juvenal Marizamunda on August 28 received a delegation from Mozambique’s Ministry of National Defence led by Maj Gen Samuel Luluva, Director General of Social Services, at Rwanda Defence Force headquarters in Kimihurura.
The meeting focused on exchanging experience and strengthening existing cooperation in military welfare management, including social services and support programmes for service members and their families.
During a week-long working visit, the Mozambican delegation visited several Rwandan institutions involved in military welfare, including ZIGAMA CSS, the Armed Forces Shop (AFOS) and the Military Medical Insurance (MMI) scheme.
The delegation also toured the Kigali Genocide Memorial and the Campaign Against Genocide Museum as part of its visit to Rwanda.
The latest engagement adds a welfare dimension to the broader defence relationship between Rwanda and Mozambique, which includes security cooperation in northern Mozambique.
Rwandan forces have been deployed in Mozambique under a bilateral arrangement to support counterterrorism operations in Cabo Delgado, where the two countries have worked together against armed insurgents.
The exchange on military welfare reflects efforts by the two countries to share experience beyond operational cooperation and strengthen support systems for their armed forces.
