Saranda Oliva Umutoni has won the “Umunota w’Umuganura 2026” short-video competition, taking the top prize of Rwf1 million for her entry promoting Rwanda’s cultural heritage and the values of Umuganura.
Umutoni scored 84.4% to finish first in the competition organised by the Rwanda Cultural Heritage Academy, which used short-form digital content to engage young people in promoting Umuganura. The competition was launched ahead of the August 7 national celebration.
She was followed by Shema Emmy, who scored 80% and received Rwf800,000, while Twahirwa Ravanelly finished third with 77.2% and won Rwf700,000.
Participants used short videos to explain the meaning and importance of Umuganura while highlighting values such as unity, patriotism, hard work, solidarity and self-reliance.
The competition also recognised participants who finished from fourth to 10th place, with each receiving Rwf200,000.
The initiative was held under the theme, “Umuganura, a source of unity and a foundation for self-reliance,” reflecting efforts to use digital platforms to connect younger generations with Rwanda’s cultural heritage.
Umuganura, Rwanda’s annual harvest celebration, is traditionally associated with giving thanks for the harvest and sharing its fruits, while also promoting unity and community values.
