Prime Minister Justin Nsengiyumva has met with Rwandans living in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, highlighting Rwanda’s development and investment opportunities while thanking the diaspora for its contribution to the country’s development.
The meeting was held in New York on the evening of September 25, 2026, during Nsengiyumva’s visit to the United States to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81).
Nsengiyumva was accompanied by Minister of Environment Dr. Bernadette Arakwiye, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Olivier Nduhungirehe, Minister of Internal Security Dr. Vincent Biruta, State Minister in the Ministry of Health Dr. Yvan Butera and other government officials.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister highlighted investment opportunities available to Rwandans living abroad and encouraged them to share their knowledge and expertise, build partnerships and contribute to Rwanda’s development efforts.
The Rwandan diaspora plays an important role in the country’s economy through remittances, which support activities including businesses, job creation, real estate investment and other forms of economic activity.
Data from the National Bank of Rwanda (BNR) shows that remittances from Rwandans living abroad have increased significantly over the past five years, nearly doubling during the period.
According to BNR figures, Rwandans abroad sent $379 million to Rwanda in 2021. The amount increased to $461 million in 2022.
Remittances reached $505 million in 2023 before declining slightly to $502 million in 2024.
In 2025, remittances increased by 27.3%, reaching $640 million, the highest figure recorded during the period.
Nsengiyumva urged Rwandans living in the United States to take advantage of investment opportunities in Rwanda while continuing to contribute their skills, experience and resources to the country’s development.
