Rwanda’s Minister of Sports, Nelly Mukazayire, has congratulated the national football team, Amavubi, following their 2-1 victory over Cape Verde in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Amavubi secured the win on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, beating Cape Verde on home soil in their second Group K qualifying match.

Mukazayire congratulated the players in a message posted on X, praising their determination and encouraging them to maintain their focus as they continue their qualification campaign.

“AMAVUBI. Well done for fighting hard and showing that you are young but not small. Keep going, you are capable and supported. Continue with passion, discipline and commitment to the goal. #AFCON2027,” she wrote.

Rwanda’s goals were scored by Claude Niyomugabo and Elie Tatou Iradukunda, while Gilson Benchimol Tavares scored Cape Verde’s only goal.

The victory gave Amavubi six points from their opening two matches and put them at the top of Group K with a goal difference of three at the time, pending the result of the Liberia-Mali match.

Rwanda opened its qualifying campaign with a 3-1 victory over Liberia before following it up with the away win against Cape Verde.

Amavubi will return to action in November when they face Mali twice. Rwanda will travel to Mali for the first match on November 11 before hosting the West African side on November 15.

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
