Residents of Mbazi Sector in Huye District, Southern Province, are celebrating the completion of a new gymnasium and football pitch fitted with artificial turf, expanding access to sports facilities in the area.

The two facilities have been completed and are already being used by residents and local sports teams.

The gymnasium was built at a cost of more than RWF620 million and includes accommodation and other facilities designed to support teams during training camps, retreats and preparations for competitions.

The football pitch, known as Byiza Stadium, was fitted with artificial turf previously used at Huye International Stadium, which is currently undergoing renovation and receiving new turf.

The new pitch is expected to benefit ES Mutunda WFC, a women’s football team competing in Rwanda’s second division, while also providing young people in Mbazi with more opportunities to train and develop their sporting talents.

Nkundineza Valens, president of ES Mutunda, told Umunota that construction of the football pitch and gymnasium began in May 2025.

He said the facilities respond to the need for proper sports infrastructure in the area, particularly for a club that competes at national level.

The gymnasium’s accommodation facilities are also expected to allow teams to organise training camps and prepare for competitions without having to travel to other areas.

Beyond supporting organised teams, the facilities are expected to give residents greater access to sports and recreational activities and create an environment where young athletes can develop their skills.

The investment adds to Huye’s growing sports infrastructure and provides Mbazi with facilities that could support both local participation and the development of competitive athletes.
