Rambura WFC and Gakenke Ladies will face each other in a football match on October 15, 2026, to mark the International Day of Rural Women in Gakenke District.

Both teams recently earned promotion to Rwanda’s top-flight women’s football league. The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) selected them to play in the match as part of the celebrations.

FERWAFA began marking the day in 2025, when it organised a match featuring former women’s football players in Ngoma District.

Internationally, the International Day of Rural Women is observed every year on October 15. The United Nations officially established the day in 2007 through Resolution 62/136, adopted by the General Assembly on December 18 that year. It was first observed internationally on October 15, 2008.

The day aims to recognise rural women’s contributions to agricultural development, food security and poverty reduction, while encouraging various stakeholders to support their advancement.

The match between Rambura WFC and Gakenke Ladies is also expected to provide an opportunity to highlight women’s role in the development of football and encourage more women to participate in the sport.
