Health Minister Dr Sabin Nsanzimana has urged young people to make exercise part of their daily lives, saying physical activity benefits both physical and mental health by strengthening bones and muscles, improving physical fitness and reducing the risk of depression.

He made the remarks on Sunday, October 11, 2026, while attending a monthly karate training session that also featured a campaign to raise awareness among young people about the dangers of drug abuse.

The event was held under the theme “Sport is life – Getting drunk is not our thing”, encouraging people to embrace physical activity and shun drugs and substance abuse.

Nsanzimana told the young people that sport can play an important role in preventing substance abuse by keeping the body and mind engaged in constructive activities rather than harmful habits such as excessive alcohol consumption.

“Sport builds the body and protects the brain. It also develops the perseverance and discipline needed to help people reduce their alcohol consumption or give up alcohol and drugs altogether,” he said.

He urged both young people and adults to make exercise a habit, reminding them that an active lifestyle can significantly reduce the risk of illness and the need for medical care.
