The Rwandan government has expressed sympathy to traders, business owners, people who used Musanze’s GOICO market and families affected by the fire that severely damaged the commercial building on Saturday afternoon, October 10, 2026.
In a statement released on Sunday, October 11, the Ministry of Local Government (MINALOC) said two people sustained minor injuries, while 15 others experienced distress following the incident.
The ministry said the affected individuals were taken to hospital for medical attention. Most had since been discharged, while two of those who experienced distress remained under medical observation.
The government pledged to work with relevant institutions to support the reconstruction of GOICO market and enable traders to resume their business activities.
MINALOC said the competent authorities were investigating the cause of the fire.
The government also commended the emergency responders, local leaders and residents who worked together to save lives and prevent the fire from spreading to neighbouring commercial buildings.
“The government extends its sincere appreciation to the Rwanda National Police Fire and Rescue Brigade, local authorities and residents who joined the rescue efforts, doing everything possible to ensure that no lives were lost and to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby commercial buildings,” the statement said.
