Education facilities worth more than Rwf7.4 billion have been inaugurated in Gicumbi District, including classrooms, girls’ sanitation facilities and laboratories.

The facilities include 963 classrooms, girls’ sanitation facilities, 25 newly established schools, student dormitories, modern laboratories and libraries. They were constructed with support from the World Bank from 2020 under a programme aimed at improving the quality of basic education.

The project, known as the Quality Basic Education for Human Capital Development Project, is implemented by the Ministry of Education in partnership with the World Bank.

It seeks to improve the quality of education, strengthen teachers’ skills, help students continue their studies and provide safe and adequate learning environments.

Teachers say the new facilities have helped improve children’s learning conditions and made it easier to maintain proper hygiene among girls.

Gicumbi District Mayor Emmanuel Nzabonimpa said the infrastructure had made education more accessible to children who previously had to travel long distances to school. It has also helped ease overcrowding and encouraged students to take science subjects, improving their chances of academic success.

“Whether it was overcrowded classrooms, the long distances children travelled to school or students who lacked accommodation, these challenges have been addressed,” he said.

Mutezinka Flora, Deputy Director General of the Rwanda Education Board (REB), said the infrastructure development programme was also intended to demonstrate to partners that their investments were producing tangible results.

Cooperation between the Ministry of Education and the World Bank in developing school infrastructure since 2019 has yielded significant results.

In 2025 alone, more than 11,000 classrooms and 14,680 toilet facilities were constructed across the country, helping reduce overcrowding and improve access to education, particularly in rural areas.

The Ministry of Education says these achievements demonstrate the country’s commitment to improving education quality, supporting students to continue their studies and strengthening teachers’ capacity.
