Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, visited Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) headquarters in Kigali on Tuesday as part of a five-day working visit to Rwanda running from October 18 to 23, 2026.

Lt Gen Shaibu first held talks with Rwanda’s Chief of Defence Staff, Gen MK Mubaraka Muganga, before meeting the Chief of Staff of the Rwanda Army, Maj Gen Vincent Nyakarundi.

The discussions focused on strengthening existing cooperation between the Nigerian and Rwandan armed forces, as well as security and military issues of mutual interest.

Speaking to the media after the meetings, Lt Gen Shaibu said the visit was intended to further strengthen the longstanding military ties between the two countries.

“As an outcome of today’s discussions, we have committed to strengthening key measures to implement the various existing bilateral cooperation agreements in areas including training, the exchange of instructors and experts in military equipment,” he said.

During the visit, Shaibu and his delegation also paid tribute to victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi at the Kigali Genocide Memorial. They also visited the Campaign Against Genocide Museum, which documents the military campaign to stop the genocide.

The visit underlines ongoing efforts by Rwanda and Nigeria to strengthen military relations and expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
