Dancer Ishimwe Thierry, popularly known as Titi Brown, has expressed relief after the Kigali High Court dismissed the prosecution’s appeal against his acquittal on a charge of defiling a minor, ending nearly five years of legal proceedings.

Speaking to IGIHE, Titi Brown said the ruling had brought him happiness and peace of mind after years of uncertainty over the case.

Although he was acquitted by the Nyarugenge Intermediate Court in 2023, the prosecution’s appeal prevented him from feeling completely at ease as he awaited the final decision.

“I received the court’s decision positively because, as we know, our country has an impartial justice system. I thank God. I am now filled with gratitude. At least, this is the first time I feel my heart is at peace. When someone appeals against your acquittal, you know the case is still hanging over you, and you cannot truly relax,” he said.

Titi Brown plans to refocus on his work following the ruling, saying he feels relieved after carrying the burden of the case for years.

The prosecution had appealed the Nyarugenge Intermediate Court’s decision, arguing that the judge had overlooked some statements made by witnesses.

However, the Kigali High Court found that the prosecution’s evidence was insufficient to establish beyond reasonable doubt that Titi Brown had committed the offence.

The court consequently upheld the Nyarugenge Intermediate Court’s ruling of November 10, 2023, which acquitted him. It also ruled that no compensation would be awarded in the case.

Titi Brown was arrested on November 10, 2021, over allegations of defiling a 17-year-old girl. He had initially been sentenced to 25 years in prison but was acquitted in November 2023 and released after spending two years in detention.
