Rwandan singer Mugisha Benjamin, popularly known as The Ben, has shared a humorous story of how he managed to return to school after being expelled for switching off electricity at his school and a nearby hospital.
The singer told the story during a Gen-Z Comedy show at Camp Kigali on Thursday night, August 13, 2026, where he reflected on some of the memorable incidents from his childhood.
The event marked four years of the Gen-Z Comedy Show and brought together a largely youthful audience. The Ben also used the occasion to encourage young people to stay away from substandard alcoholic drinks.
Recalling his time at Gahini Secondary School, The Ben said he belonged to a group of mischievous but talented students known as “Aba Blues.”
He said one day he switched off the school’s electricity, unaware that the system was connected to a nearby hospital.
“We had a group called Aba Blues, made up of troublesome but talented students. One day, I switched off the school’s lights, but somehow our school’s lights were connected to those of the hospital. So I ended up switching off both the hospital and the school,” he said.
The incident resulted in his expulsion from the school.
But after reaching Kayonza, The Ben said he called the school’s headteacher and pretended to be a military officer in an attempt to reverse the decision.
“I called the headteacher using a loud voice and pretended to be a soldier. I said about three military-style phrases, and he immediately told me, ‘Children are children; let him come back.’ Then he asked, ‘Who expelled him?’” he recalled.
The Ben returned to school, where he found the headteacher waiting at the gate.
“I was told, ‘I have spoken to your father,’” he recalled, drawing laughter from the audience.
The singer also gave fans a preview of his upcoming song, “Inshallah,” a romantic track he has been teasing in recent days.
The performance drew an enthusiastic response from the audience, with fans dancing and cheering as he introduced the new song.
