The AFC/M23 coalition has announced a ceasefire, saying the move is intended to demonstrate its responsibility and willingness to create a genuine opportunity for restoring lasting peace in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
The group accused authorities in Kinshasa of continuing a campaign of violence against civilians and of disregarding agreements, actions it said violate international humanitarian law.
According to AFC/M23, Congolese government forces and allied armed groups have continued to carry out targeted attacks against the coalition’s positions as well as densely populated civilian areas, posing serious risks to civilian safety.
The group’s spokesperson, Lawrence Kanyuka, reported that from around 5:00 a.m., government forces launched attacks using drones and naval units, targeting both residential areas and AFC/M23 positions in Makobola, allegedly from the direction of Baraka.
He further stated that at approximately 5:30 a.m., the Minembwe area was also attacked using drones and heavy weapons, creating fear and significant danger among the civilian population.
AFC/M23 said it was alerting Congolese civilians and international partners to what it described as repeated violations of the ceasefire and ongoing violence against non-combatants.
The coalition argued that these actions demonstrate a lack of commitment by the Kinshasa authorities to peace and civilian protection, accusing them of perpetuating instability and a culture of impunity that continues to deepen suffering in the country.
Kanyuka called on the international community and regional organizations to intensify efforts to halt the violence, apply pressure on those responsible, and support a political solution based on inclusive dialogue aimed at achieving sustainable peace.
