Minister of Internal Security Vincent Biruta has called on road users to observe traffic laws and protect road infrastructure, saying irresponsible behavior on the roads threatens national development, peace, and security.

Biruta made the remarks on Friday, January 9, during a road safety awareness campaign organized by the Rwanda National Police in Kayonza District, Eastern Province. The campaign, dubbed Turindane Tugereyo Amahoro, marked its first edition of 2026 and was held at the Kayonza bus terminal.

Addressing participants, the minister said roads are a vital public asset that supports economic growth and social development, and stressed that their proper use requires discipline and shared responsibility among all road users.

He noted that improving road safety depends on collective effort, urging drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists, and pedestrians to comply with traffic regulations and remain mindful of the safety of others.

Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations Vincent Sano echoed the minister’s message, emphasizing that road accidents cause losses that extend beyond individual families to the nation at large. He called for stronger cooperation between the public and authorities to reduce accidents and save lives.

Sano encouraged participants to pass on the road safety message to others and to put it into practice in their daily activities.

The Turindane Tugereyo Amahoro campaign is an enhanced version of the long-running Gerayo Amahoro initiative launched by the Rwanda National Police.

The program aims to improve road safety nationwide by raising awareness among all categories of road users about traffic laws and common violations that contribute to road accidents.
