Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Olivier Nduhungirehe, on January 29 received Serge Brammertz, the Chief Prosecutor of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT), who is on an official visit to Rwanda.
The meeting took place in Kigali, although details of the discussions were not disclosed by either side.
Brammertz’s visit comes amid ongoing cooperation between Rwanda and the IRMCT on issues related to international justice, particularly the pursuit of individuals still at large for crimes committed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
During a previous visit to Rwanda in February 2024, the IRMCT Prosecutor said his engagements were aimed at holding high-level and technical discussions on efforts to expand access to justice for genocide survivors and victims.
At the time, Brammertz noted that more than 1,000 individuals suspected of involvement in the genocide remain fugitives, living in various countries across Africa, Europe, North America and elsewhere.
He reiterated the IRMCT’s commitment to working with Rwanda and other governments to locate, arrest and bring to justice those accused of genocide-related crimes, wherever they may be found.
