The Government of Rwanda has sent humanitarian assistance to Mozambique following devastating floods that have displaced thousands of people, officials announced on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the assistance includes 20 tonnes of food supplies, emergency relief items and medical supplies. Rwanda also indicated that additional support is expected to be dispatched in the coming days.

The floods were triggered by heavy rains that began in early January, affecting southern Mozambique, particularly the provinces of Gaza and Maputo. The disaster destroyed homes and key infrastructure, leaving an estimated 700,000 people affected.

According to the BBC, at least 100 people have been confirmed dead, while others remain missing.

The United Nations refugee agency has warned that Mozambique will require at least USD 38.2 million in 2026 to support recovery efforts and provide basic services to communities impacted by the floods.
