Officials from the Rwanda Cycling Federation, alongside leaders from Gatsibo and Nyagatare districts, joined the family of a child who died in an accident during the first stage of the Tour du Rwanda, offering support and condolences.
The child was buried with honors on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.
The tragedy occurred on Sunday, February 22, 2026, in Gabiro, Gatsibo District, during the race’s opening stage from Rukomo in Gicumbi to Rwamagana. Two people, including the child, were killed, and six others were injured, according to the Tour du Rwanda organizers.
The accident involved a support vehicle from the race caravan, which veered off the road and struck spectators.
The Tour du Rwanda organizers, the Ministry of Sports, and the International Cycling Union (UCI) expressed condolences and extended solidarity to the families affected by the tragedy.
