Two priests from the Byumba Diocese were arrested by security authorities in Gatsibo District on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026, for conducting Mass at a location not authorized for religious services.
Father Didier Nzaramba, serving in Kiziguro Parish, held Mass at a chapel inside a convent home in Kabarore Sector. Local authorities said the venue was not approved for hosting religious ceremonies.
He was arrested alongside Father Eric Uwayezu, the parish priest of Nyakayaga Parish, also in Byumba Diocese. Both priests are currently held at Kabarore Police Station.
According to reports, the church where the Mass was originally intended to be held had been closed for failing to meet required standards. The priests therefore conducted the service at the convent, which authorities deemed an unauthorized site.
Authorities said the arrests were carried out to enforce regulations on approved religious venues and ensure compliance with safety and administrative standards.
