Rwandan security forces deployed in Mozambique under the Rwanda Security Force (RSF-5) joined Mozambican authorities and international partners, including TotalEnergies, to mark the 32nd anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The commemoration, held in Mocímboa da Praia District, brought together senior military officials, government representatives, and religious leaders in a unified tribute to the victims and a renewed call for vigilance against genocide ideology.

Addressing participants, the Commander of the Rwandan Joint Task Force (JTFC), Brig. Gen. C.M. Mujuni, emphasized that remembrance remains a critical pillar in preventing future atrocities. He noted that the Genocide against the Tutsi was driven by divisive politics rooted in colonial legacies and decades of poor governance.

Mujuni highlighted that over one million Tutsi were killed in just 100 days while the international community failed to intervene, stressing that it was the intervention of the former Rwanda Patriotic Army (RPA) that brought the genocide to an end.

He reaffirmed Rwanda’s commitment to unity, peacebuilding, and ensuring that genocide never happens again.

Representing Mozambican authorities, Brig. Gen. Tomás Mponha said Rwanda’s history offers powerful lessons for Mozambique and the wider international community, particularly on the dangers of divisionism and the importance of timely intervention.

He also commended the role of Rwandan forces in supporting efforts to restore stability and combat terrorism in Cabo Delgado Province.

The commemoration concluded with a renewed call for unity, collective responsibility, and sustained partnerships to safeguard peace and security.
