Authorities in Bugesera District have commemorated more than 3,000 Tutsi killed at Rebero Hill in Mayange Sector during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
The event, held on April 14, 2026, formed part of the 32nd commemoration activities and was attended by the Minister of National Unity and Civic Engagement, Jean Damascène Bizimana, alongside local leaders, survivors, and residents.
Testimonies indicate that the victims, who had sought refuge on the hill, were killed on April 13, 1994, in attacks carried out by soldiers from the Gako Military Camp and Interahamwe militia, using both firearms and traditional weapons. Survivors recalled the victims’ resistance, describing their final stand as an act of courage.
Speaking at the commemoration, Dr. Bizimana called on parents to instill values of patriotism, unity, and resilience in younger generations, emphasizing the importance of teaching the history of the Genocide against the Tutsi.
“Children must be taught courage, discipline, and love for their country. Understanding this history is essential to ensuring that such tragedy never happens again,” he said.
He cautioned against passing on hatred and division, warning that such attitudes amount to transmitting a dangerous legacy to future generations.
Dr. Bizimana also urged young people to reject any form of genocide ideology and divisionism, encouraging them to play an active role in building a united and resilient nation.
He concluded by expressing solidarity with survivors, reaffirming that the country stands with them and remains committed to preserving memory and strengthening unity.
