DJ Iraa decries threats over Rwandan citizenship

Rwanda-based DJ Iraa has spoken out about ongoing threats and online abuse directed at her following her decision to acquire Rwandan citizenship, saying the backlash—largely from some Burundians—has persisted more than a year later.

Taking to Instagram, the 29-year-old DJ expressed concern over the continued hostility, questioning why her personal decision remains a source of anger. “After a year, you are still upset. You keep insulting me and threatening me—I don’t see the problem,” she wrote.

Iraa emphasized that her choice was neither forced nor regrettable, but rather a deliberate step influenced by the opportunities she found in Rwanda, where her career took shape. She noted that she was given a platform to grow without discrimination despite being a foreigner, crediting her success to “God, Rwanda, and hard work.”

She dismissed claims that acquiring another nationality amounts to rejecting one’s country of origin, arguing that such decisions are common globally. Comparing it to obtaining citizenship in countries like the United States or Canada, Iraa said her case should not be treated differently.

“There is no issue with acquiring another nationality. It is not a betrayal of one’s country,” she said, attributing the criticism to what she described as underlying resentment towards Rwanda.

The DJ also warned fans about fake social media accounts impersonating her—particularly on Facebook—urging them to ignore content posted under her name on such platforms.

DJ Iraa publicly requested Rwandan citizenship in March 2025 and was officially granted it on April 7, 2025, as published in the Official Gazette.

Having moved to Rwanda in 2015 after completing her secondary education in Burundi, Iraa has grown into one of the country’s notable female DJs, regularly performing at major events and entertainment platforms.

She applied for and was granted Rwandan citizenship, despite continued opposition from some critics.
