Rwanda registered 4,479 divorce cases in 2025, marking a notable increase compared to previous years, according to data released by the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR).

Of the total cases, 2,629 were finalized through courts, while the rest were processed through civil registration offices, reflecting growing reliance on formal legal systems in handling marital breakdowns.

Kigali City recorded the highest number of divorces at 1,119 cases, followed by the Eastern Province with 1,011. The Northern Province reported the lowest figure at 529 cases, highlighting regional disparities often linked to differences in urbanization, economic conditions, and lifestyle patterns.

While the report does not detail specific drivers of the increase, analysts point to shifting social and economic dynamics, including changing perceptions of marriage, rising individual independence, and greater empowerment of women, which has enabled some to leave unstable or unsatisfactory relationships.

Improved access to legal and administrative procedures for registering divorces is also believed to have contributed to the upward trend.

The rise comes amid long-standing concerns over the stability of family structures. In previous remarks, President Paul Kagame has cautioned against the weakening of families, describing them as a key foundation of society.

In 2019, divorce cases had previously risen to nearly 9,000 before declining in subsequent years, only to climb again in 2025.

Family experts emphasize the importance of stronger preparation before marriage, particularly on financial planning, shared life goals, and communication. They also urge couples to seek professional counseling when challenges arise and to address contributing factors such as domestic violence, substance abuse, and neglect.
