Public transport fares remain unchanged despite rise in fuel prices

The Ministry of Infrastructure has assured the public that the recent increase in fuel prices will not lead to higher fares for public transport users.

The announcement was made by the Minister of State in charge of Infrastructure, Jean de Dieu Uwihanganye, during a live interview on Radio Rwanda on Friday morning.

The latest fuel price adjustment, which took effect on April 17, saw petrol rise to Frw 2,938 per litre from Frw 2,303, while diesel remained unchanged at Frw 2,205 per litre.

Officials said the stability of diesel prices has been key in maintaining current transport fares, as diesel is the primary fuel used in buses and freight transport across the country.

Uwihanganye explained that government prioritised stabilising diesel due to its central role in public transport, goods movement, agriculture, industry, and energy generation.

“Petrol is mainly used by private vehicle owners, who have alternative mobility options. Diesel, however, is essential for public transport, logistics, and productive sectors of the economy,” he said.

He acknowledged that global fuel market pressures remain elevated and may continue to affect prices, but noted that government is implementing mitigation measures, including targeted support, to cushion citizens from immediate impacts.

Authorities emphasized that the current approach is aimed at maintaining transport affordability while safeguarding essential economic activities and limiting inflationary pressure on goods and services.
