Police in Nyanza District have arrested four individuals, including a father and his son, in connection with the death of an elderly woman suspected to have been living with a mental health condition.
The incident occurred in the early hours of April 23, 2026, in Ndago Village, Bugali Cell, Ntyazo Sector, where the deceased was later found lifeless in a nearby field.
According to initial accounts, at around 1:30 a.m., a local resident heard voices outside his home and went to investigate. He reportedly found four people with an elderly woman who appeared weak, exhausted, and unable to speak clearly.
The group allegedly told the resident that they had found her inside one of their homes around midnight and accused her of attempting to bewitch them.
They later claimed they were taking her to local security authorities. However, the resident returned to sleep and later discovered the woman’s body in a sorghum field the following morning.
Authorities identified the deceased as Mukantaganira Clotilde, 67, a resident of Gakindo Village, Bugali Cell, Ntyazo Sector.
The Executive Secretary of Ntyazo Sector, Muhoza Alphonse, confirmed the incident, saying investigations are underway to establish the exact circumstances surrounding her death.
“Four people who were found with her during the night have been arrested and are being questioned to clarify what happened,” he said.
Among those detained are a father and his son.
The husband of the deceased said she had been living with a mental health condition for nearly two years.
The body has been transferred to Nyanza District Hospital for post-mortem examination as investigations continue.
Authorities have urged residents to report suspicious incidents promptly and avoid taking the law into their own hands, stressing the importance of safeguarding vulnerable community members.
