Former entertainment journalist Sengabo Jean Bosco, popularly known as Fatakumavuta, currently serving a sentence at Nyarugenge Prison, has weighed in on Rwanda’s music industry, commending Bruce Melodie while offering critical remarks about The Ben.

In an interview with IGIHE, Fatakumavuta said he has adapted to life in detention and continues to follow developments in the entertainment sector through available channels. He also expressed confidence that he will return to public life and contribute to national development after completing his sentence.

Commenting on the New Year Groove concert held on January 1, 2026, at BK Arena—featuring Bruce Melodie and The Ben—he described the show as a success, but questioned the trend of top artists relying on joint performances to fill major venues.

He pointed to gospel artists such as Chryso Ndasingwa and Israel Mbonyi, noting that they have independently filled large venues multiple times, suggesting that secular artists of similar stature should also be able to do so individually.

Fatakumavuta singled out Bruce Melodie for praise, saying he delivered a well-prepared and polished performance.

“Bruce Melodie was fully prepared in every possible way. I saw the full symphony band and a complete setup—he performed like a fully developed artist,” he said.

In contrast, he suggested that The Ben leaned more on his popularity than performance structure.

“The Ben often says he has fans. He tends to rely on that following. Coming on stage alone and later adding a choir was not very convincing to me,” he remarked.

Despite his criticism, he emphasized that Bruce Melodie still has more to prove in upcoming concerts, particularly during planned summer shows across Rwanda’s provinces, which he said will test the artists differently from the BK Arena stage.
