Antoine Cardinal Kambanda has said religious leaders in Rwanda are stepping up efforts to equip their followers with knowledge aimed at supporting government initiatives to protect and strengthen the Rwandan family.
He made the remarks during a consultative meeting that brought together representatives of faith-based organizations to discuss family wellbeing and public health.
Participants reviewed findings from studies on maternal health, child welfare, youth development, and family stability. Among key concerns raised was the rise in caesarean births, which has increased from 14% to 25%, particularly in urban areas.
Cardinal Kambanda said religious institutions will focus on raising awareness among parents, youth, and adolescents on health and responsible family life, while addressing challenges such as domestic conflicts, violence, and divorce.
He warned that family breakdowns negatively affect children, noting that a large proportion of children living on the streets are orphans, highlighting the urgency of strengthening family structures.
Consolée Uwimana urged religious leaders to use their influence to promote dialogue, positive values, and behavioral change within communities.
She emphasized the role of faith-based platforms in delivering messages that support unity, peace, and sustainable family development.
