Rwanda National Police, in collaboration with the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB), has arrested six individuals suspected of defrauding young people by promising them opportunities to study in Canada.

According to authorities, the suspects allegedly used social media platforms to promote fake scholarship offers and overseas study placements, targeting youth seeking international education opportunities.

On Wednesday, large numbers of young people gathered at a hotel in Kigali after being mobilised online with promises of guidance on studying in Canada. Reports indicate that nearly 1,000 youth had been linked to the initiative through various online channels, only to later discover that the opportunity was not legitimate.

Later the same day, Police confirmed the arrest of six suspects in connection with the alleged scam. In a statement posted on X, Police said: “In collaboration with the Rwanda Investigation Bureau, six (06) people have been arrested on suspicion of deceiving youth by promising them opportunities to study in Canada.”

Authorities said the suspects are currently being questioned as investigations continue to establish the full extent of the alleged fraud and whether additional individuals or networks are involved.

Police warned the public, particularly young people, to exercise caution when approached with overseas education offers, stressing the importance of verifying institutions and avoiding unregistered agents operating through social media.

Investigations into the case are ongoing.
