Police in Rwanda’s Southern Province have confirmed that they shot dead a 22-year-old man suspected of robbery and sexual assault in Gisagara District.
The suspect, identified as Nzabarinda Alphonse from Rwanza Cell in Save Sector, had been accused by residents of involvement in violent crimes, including robbery and attacks on women and girls.
According to the Police spokesperson in the Southern Province, CIP Kamanzi Hassan, residents alerted security organs on May 10, 2026, after spotting the suspect carrying suspected stolen items and a traditional weapon as he entered a small forest known as Cyezuburo in Save Sector.
Police officers responded to the alert and pursued the suspect after he reportedly attempted to flee upon being spotted. One officer fired at him, resulting in his death, authorities said.
Police further indicated that Nzabarinda had recently been released from Huye Correctional Facility (Karubanda), where he had served a sentence for robbery involving traditional weapons.
Authorities said investigations into the suspect’s alleged criminal activities are ongoing, and urged residents to continue sharing timely information with security organs to help prevent crime in their communities.
