Rwanda National Police has arrested three men suspected of stealing motorcycles in Nyanza District, as security operations against theft and other crimes intensify in the Southern Province.
The suspects were apprehended overnight in Busasamana Sector, Rwesero Cell, following a coordinated operation involving police officers, other security organs, and local residents.
According to authorities, the group is believed to have been involved in stealing motorcycles, transporting them into nearby forests, and dismantling them into spare parts for resale. The parts were allegedly used to assemble other stolen motorcycles or sold separately.
Police confirmed that two motorcycles were recovered from the suspects at the time of arrest, already being stripped of their components.
Speaking on the incident, Southern Province Police spokesperson CIP Kamanzi Hassan said the suspects are currently detained at Busasamana Police Station as investigations continue in collaboration with the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB).
He added that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals linked to the network.
Security officials praised residents for their continued cooperation, noting that timely information sharing has played a key role in preventing and responding to crime in the area.
Police also issued a warning to individuals involved in criminal activities, particularly motorcycle theft, urging them to abandon such practices or face legal consequences.
“Anyone found engaging in such crimes will be arrested and brought to justice in accordance with the law,” police warned, reaffirming that security operations will continue across the district.
Authorities reiterated that community policing remains central to tackling theft-related crimes, especially those involving motorcycles, which have been increasingly targeted by criminal groups due to their resale value and mobility.
