More than 500,000 residents in eight sectors across Gatsibo District and Kayonza District are set to access clean water following the completion of a major water supply project by WASAC.

The project includes a modern water treatment plant constructed along the shores of Lake Muhazi in Murambi Sector, Gatsibo District.

The facility has the capacity to treat 12,000 cubic metres of water per day and is part of the Muhazi Water Supply System project valued at about Frw21 billion.

The development is expected to boost access to safe drinking water in Eastern Province and support Rwanda’s target of achieving universal water access by 2029 under the country’s second National Strategy for Transformation (NST2).

Jimmy Gasore said the government remains optimistic about meeting the 100 percent water access target through ongoing and upcoming infrastructure projects nationwide.

He noted that several strategic projects are under implementation, while others are being prepared to strengthen water production and distribution systems across the country.

In the draft national budget framework for 2026/27–2028/29 recently submitted to Parliament, Yusuf Murangwa indicated that the government plans to invest over Frw13.3 billion in water, sanitation and hygiene projects.

Beyond the Muhazi project, the government is also prioritising the rehabilitation of the Kanzenze Water Treatment Plant in Eastern Province, which is currently operating below full capacity.

Plans are equally underway to upgrade the Karenge water plant in Rwamagana District, increasing its daily production capacity from 12,000 to 48,000 cubic metres.

Authorities added that damaged water distribution networks in urban and rural areas will continue to be rehabilitated to improve efficiency and expand access to clean water services nationwide.
