Ben’Imana, directed by Dusabejambo Clémentine, has made history after being officially screened at the 79th Cannes Film Festival in France, becoming the first film directed by a Rwandan filmmaker to be selected for the prestigious global event.
The screening took place on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, as part of the “Un Certain Regard” section—one of Cannes’ most respected categories, dedicated to films distinguished by original storytelling, artistic vision, and innovative cinematic language.
The event was attended by senior Rwandan officials, including the Minister of State in the Ministry of Youth and Arts Development, Umutoni Sandrine, alongside Rwanda’s Ambassador to France, François Nkulikiyimfura, highlighting the country’s growing presence on the international film stage.
The screening also brought together the film’s cast, featuring some of Rwanda’s well-known screen talents. Among them was Clémentine Uwimana Nyirinkindi, popularly known for her role in Papa Sava, who plays Veneranda in the film.
Other cast members include Isabelle Kabano, Nishimwe Kesia Kelly, Uwabeza Léocadie, Uwamahoro Antoinette, and Tuyisenge Aimé Valens.
Produced through an international collaboration involving Ivorian filmmaker Samantha Biffot, Rwandan producer Uwayezu Marie Epiphanie, and Egyptian producer Mostafa El Kashef, Ben’Imana reflects a growing cross-border African cinematic partnership.
The film follows Veneranda, a survivor of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, who struggles to rebuild her life after deep trauma. Her journey takes a painful turn when her daughter becomes pregnant, reopening emotional wounds and forcing her to confront unresolved past experiences.
Beyond her directorial role in Ben’Imana, Dusabejambo Clémentine is also an established actress, known for her performances in Icyasha, A Place for Myself, Lyiza, and Behind the World.
The selection of Ben’Imana at Cannes marks a significant milestone for Rwanda’s film industry, reinforcing its growing visibility and recognition on the global cinematic stage.
