Prime Minister Dr Justin Nsengiyumva has arrived in Cotonou, Benin, where he is representing President Paul Kagame at the inauguration ceremony of President-elect Romuald Wadagni.

The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place on May 24, 2026.

Romuald Wadagni, who previously served as Minister of Finance under President Patrice Talon, was elected president of Benin after securing 94% of the vote in the April 12, 2026 election.

During his tenure as finance minister, Wadagni led key economic reforms, including strengthening domestic revenue collection and improving public financial management systems.

He is widely regarded as one of Africa’s emerging leaders in finance and investment, having previously worked with international firms such as Deloitte before entering public service.

Wadagni will serve a seven-year term, succeeding outgoing President Patrice Talon.

Relations between Rwanda and Benin remain strong, with cooperation spanning governance, security, and economic development.

In recent years, the two countries have strengthened ties by easing travel requirements, including visa exemptions for citizens of both nations, following similar policy steps adopted by Rwanda.

During previous high-level exchanges, Rwanda and Benin signed nine cooperation agreements covering multiple sectors, including efforts to eliminate double taxation and promote trade.
