Gakenke: New suspension bridge set to ease trade and mobility

Share with Others

Residents of Karambo Sector in Gakenke District are celebrating the completion of a new suspension bridge expected to improve trade, mobility and social interaction among communities in the area.

The bridge was officially inaugurated on June 5, 2026, connecting residents of Gishyingo and Nyiramuhimba villages and surrounding areas.

Local residents say the bridge addresses long-standing challenges they faced when crossing the river, particularly during rainy seasons when access became nearly impossible.

Previously, community members were forced to leave goods on either side of the river, as crossing with items was difficult or unsafe. The situation also affected access to markets, healthcare services and schools.

Residents noted that farmers often struggled to transport their produce to market, while patients faced difficulties reaching health facilities and students were frequently delayed or unable to cross safely.

With the new infrastructure in place, residents say it is expected to significantly improve access to essential services, ease transportation of goods and reduce the daily hardships previously caused by the river barrier.
