The United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) has provided equipment to the Expanded Joint Verification Mechanism (EJVM+) to strengthen its capacity to monitor and verify compliance with ceasefire agreements in eastern DR Congo.

The handover took place in Goma on Thursday, June 4, 2026, and was led by MONUSCO’s representative in Goma, Gani Are, who stood in for the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and MONUSCO leadership in the country.

Gani Are said the initiative is grounded in UN Security Council Resolution 2808 (2025), which mandates MONUSCO to support the implementation of ceasefire agreements reached under the Doha peace process.

He noted that the newly provided office infrastructure and equipment will enhance the operational efficiency of EJVM+, at a time when insecurity continues to affect eastern DR Congo.

The support includes furnished office space and a fully equipped conference room intended to improve coordination and decision-making among monitoring teams.

According to MONUSCO, the upgraded facilities will strengthen operational management, mobility coordination, and communication among teams responsible for overseeing ceasefire implementation.

They are also expected to improve the ability of monitoring mechanisms to investigate alleged violations, coordinate responses with relevant stakeholders, and act more swiftly in cases of security incidents.

MONUSCO is also continuing to provide technical assistance to regional mechanisms operating under the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), including the Expanded Ceasefire Monitoring Mechanism (MCVE+).

These structures are mandated to investigate reported ceasefire violations in collaboration with relevant parties, with the aim of preventing renewed escalation of conflict.

MONUSCO said the support is expected to contribute to ongoing efforts to restore peace and stability in eastern DR Congo, where armed groups continue to fuel insecurity and humanitarian challenges.

The initiative comes amid continued diplomatic engagement and regional efforts aimed at strengthening ceasefire implementation and improving security in the conflict-affected eastern region.
