Kagame calls for lower air travel costs, stronger aviation investment to boost Africa’s growth

President Paul Kagame has called for increased investment in Africa’s air transport sector and urgent reforms to reduce the cost of air travel, saying the aviation industry should be seen as a driver of development rather than a financial burden.

He made the remarks while addressing the African Air Transport Convention and Expo (AATCE) in Lomé, Togo, a continental gathering of aviation leaders, policymakers, investors, and industry stakeholders focused on strengthening Africa’s air transport systems.

Kagame urged African countries to prioritize aviation as a key pillar for economic integration, noting that improved air connectivity would significantly enhance trade, investment, and cooperation across the continent.

He observed that despite Africa accounting for a large share of the world’s population, it still represents a relatively small portion of global air travel, pointing to persistent gaps in connectivity and mobility.

The President said that air routes between African cities often require transit through other continents, a situation he described as inefficient and costly, adding that it discourages intra-African trade and limits business opportunities within the continent.

He stressed the need for sustained investment in airport infrastructure, modern air traffic management systems, and a reliable aviation fuel supply chain to support the sector’s growth and efficiency.

Kagame also raised concern over high taxes and charges on air travel in Africa, noting that they remain among the highest globally and continue to hinder the development of the aviation industry.

He emphasized that while investment from banks, private capital, and development partners is important, it must be matched with policy reforms aimed at reducing costs and removing structural barriers to air connectivity.

Togo’s Prime Minister Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé also called for stronger investment in the aviation sector, highlighting the importance of regional cooperation, improved airspace integration, and the removal of barriers that restrict the free movement of air traffic across Africa.
