An elderly couple from Gishinge village, Murama cell, Kisaro sector in Rulindo District says they are living in fear after their 25-year-old son allegedly threatened to kill them unless they buy him a bicycle.

What would ordinarily be a story of family support and care has turned into distress, as the young man is accused of repeatedly harassing his parents and demanding a bicycle, warning that failure to meet his demand would result in their death.

The father says the situation escalated after he promised to buy his son a bicycle but was delayed due to financial constraints. He claims the son then began issuing repeated threats.

“He came and told me to buy him a bicycle. I agreed, but I was delayed in getting the money. He then started saying he would kill us. One night he came again and said if we don’t buy it this week, I will show you,” the father said.

The elderly couple say the threats have left them living in constant fear, forcing them at times to flee their home at night and hide in nearby bushes. They claim they have already spent several nights away from home due to insecurity concerns.

Residents say the situation has become alarming and are calling for urgent intervention to protect the couple before the threats are carried out.

The Executive Secretary of Kisaro sector, Telesphore Uwamahoro, told Radio 1 that authorities will urgently investigate the case and ensure the elderly couple’s safety.

He added that the young man could be supported through vocational training to help him earn a livelihood and eventually afford what he needs without resorting to violence.
