The Rwanda national men’s basketball team has held its first training session in Luanda, Angola, as preparations intensify for the second round of the 2027 FIBA World Cup qualifiers.
The team arrived in Angola on Monday afternoon, June 29, 2026, ahead of the qualifying window scheduled from July 2 to July 5, 2026.
Rwanda is competing in Group C alongside Nigeria, Guinea and Tunisia in the battle for a place at the 2027 World Cup, which will be hosted in Qatar.
Speaking before departure from Kigali, captain Ndizeye Dieudonné said the squad had benefited from two weeks of preparation and friendly matches, expressing confidence in the team’s readiness and the integration of new players.
Head coach Murenzi Yves also said the team is targeting improved performances despite injury setbacks to key players, including Twizerimana Cyiza Chandelier, Shema Osborn and David McCormack, all ruled out of the qualifiers.
He noted that the replacements brought into the squad are young but promising, and expected to step up at international level.
Rwanda currently sits bottom of Group C after losing all three of its opening matches in the previous qualifying window.
The team will open its campaign in this window against Guinea on July 2, before facing Tunisia on July 3, and concluding against Nigeria on July 5, 2026.
