The National Bank of Rwanda (BNR) has extended the temporary suspension of Mobicash Rwanda Ltd operations until July 30, 2026, as the regulator continues assessing the company’s compliance with payment service regulations.
The extension means Mobicash will remain barred from providing payment services or accepting funds from new customers during the additional suspension period, according to a BNR statement issued on Thursday, July 9.
BNR initially suspended Mobicash operations for three months from January 23, 2026, citing non-compliance with regulatory requirements governing payment service providers.
The central bank said existing customers with funds held on Mobicash platforms will not lose access to their money, as they will continue to be allowed to withdraw or recover their funds under BNR supervision.
“These transactions will be supervised by the National Bank of Rwanda to ensure consumer protection and the proper management of financial services,” the regulator said.
BNR said the decision to extend the suspension was made under Regulation No. 74/2023 of September 18, 2023, which governs payment service providers and empowers the regulator to take action where institutions fail to meet required obligations.
Mobicash Rwanda Ltd operates digital financial services, including electronic money transfers and storage.
The central bank said it will continue monitoring the company’s situation and provide updates regarding its operations after completing the ongoing review.
