A group of 42 Rwandan students studying abroad have been briefed on the mandate and responsibilities of the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) during a visit to the force’s headquarters in Kimihurura, Kigali.

The students, drawn from universities in Belgium, Canada, France, Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and the United States, are in Rwanda as part of the Youth Tour 2026 programme, an initiative aimed at connecting young Rwandans in the diaspora with their home country.

During their visit on July 12, 2026, the students met RDF Deputy Spokesperson Lt. Col. Simon Kabera, who explained the force’s contribution to safeguarding Rwanda’s sovereignty, maintaining national security, and supporting the country’s socio-economic development.

In his presentation, Lt. Col. Kabera highlighted the history and transformation of RDF, including the circumstances that shaped Rwanda’s journey before and after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

He also outlined the role played by the Rwanda Patriotic Army (RPA-Inkotanyi) in stopping the Genocide, rescuing civilians, liberating the country, and establishing the foundation for peace, unity, and security under the leadership of President Paul Kagame, who served as the commander of the RPA during the liberation struggle and is currently the Commander-in-Chief of RDF.

Kabera told the students that the success of the RPA-Inkotanyi was built on values such as patriotism, discipline, sacrifice, hard work, resilience, integrity, and respect for laws and regulations.

He encouraged the young Rwandans to remain proud of their identity and use the knowledge and skills gained abroad to contribute to Rwanda’s development. He also urged them to remain vigilant against misinformation and misleading content spread through social media and other communication channels.

The students also engaged with young RDF officers, including Capt. Michael Nsengiyumva, who holds a master’s degree in organisational development, Capt. Meron Rugazora, a military pilot, and Capt. Arielle Sekamana, who holds a master’s degree in information and communication technology.

The officers shared their professional experiences and encouraged the students to consider returning home after completing their studies to apply their expertise in Rwanda’s development. They also explained that RDF provides opportunities for young professionals to serve the country while using their knowledge and skills.

Lt. Col. Kabera thanked the students for visiting RDF headquarters and encouraged them to continue demonstrating patriotism, discipline, and a commitment to serving Rwanda wherever they pursue their careers.
